Phil's Fall 2012 Trip Around Montana
Sept 19 through Oct 1 Phil made a great trip around Montana
He started about 50 miles northwest of West Yellowstone in the Gravelly Mountain Range
Black Butte in the Gravelie Mountains
I spent two full days riding the ATV through colorful Aspin Groves, along 40 miles of ridge top mostly over 9,000 ft of elevation,
and past beautiful mountain streams. Evenings were spent talking to old timers around the campfire.
Yellowstone Nation Park.
I spent three day in Yellowstone. There
I saw all the interesting sites of that wonderful park.
This is the time of the year that Elk are mating (are in the rot). They have no concern about where you, are and it is picture time.
The sound of their bugling fills the night sounds.
This area is just outside of the NE enterance of Yellowstone.
I spent a day and a half exploring old mining camps
and experiencing some of the best ATV riding anywhere. I finally toped 10,000 ft mark.
The next morning was cold and very clear and it had to
be the time to drive (by car) over this magnificent pass.
Yellowstone is a very interesting park with all its geologe and animals, but lacks the mountain grandure of Glacier Park.
However, if you enter (or leave) by the NE enterance, you get it all.
Here you drive up to 11,000 ft of elevation.
Elk Veiwing In the Charlie Russell Wildlife Refuge
After Beartooth Pass I drove on into Billings and picked
up son Tim and Kenisyn Gillespie.
We drive up to the Russell Refuge. There we met up with many other families of Tim's Family's group.
We all camped on a hillside overlooking the elk refuge and hundreds of mating elk.
What a magnificent show they put on. And when we are not watching elk, I am riding the kids on the ATV.
